Media Storage hardware

Here're some notes regarding selection of hardware for Media Storage.

1. Bay numbers, e.g.  12 or 16 bays with HW RAID support.
2. HDD for OS & compatibility list.
3. NIC numbers. dual or quad w/ IPMI support.
4. RAM and PCI-E should be far more than necessary.

For example, the 2U model below serves 12-bay RAID array, w/ HDD for Linux OS on the rear, dual 10H-based NIC.

D&D solo adventure

It's interesting to know that solo adventure similar to D&D has also been developed for a long time, such as Tunnels & Trolls. It utilizes d6 or 2*d6 for determination of results, which is uch simpler than d20. It may be due to simplicity of solo gaming.

virtual personality

here's an interesting discussion about virtual personality on forum (in Chinese), which points out that virtual world for some people of later generation may be more important to real world. therefore similar behavior or responsibility may also occur 'virtually'.

Check_MK: multi-LAN

checking availability of a host with multiple LAN connection could be achieved by custom scripts. For example, ping command from other hosts on the same LAN. Just write  bash script containing proper local reports to check_MK plugin with 'ping -c 1 $thehost > /dev/null' will do the trick.

TV and newspaper influence

TV can operate multi-channels across regions with unified contents, and newspaper can easily setup local spots such as news stands in different areas. Therefore they would perform different media influence on people. TV advertisement focuses on more qualitative value, such as branding, due to the advantage of unified image through channels, while contents of newspaper differ in local versions thus quantitative effects are easier achieved. Combination of the power of TV and newspaper may result in better achievement of  both quality and quantity.

SF today: China town

China Town in SF may have longer history than other places since it much earlier developed during gold rush. ROC and CCP flags can both be seen there, and human rights violation is sometimes heard in that place. The complex situation reflects its long history and larger variety of Chinese immigrants, thus conflicts of Good and Evil may be more frequent in that place. We should all have an eye on this place more.

Golden Gate Bridge is very cool. having a parade on its sidewalk can be seen by many drivers passing by. it was built before War, and hundreds of lives were lost. it should be a national solution for economic depression during that time as well.

 

SF today: infra

SF is an edged city surrounded by water on three sides. sea breeze is therefore more strong and complicated than LA within this kind of topography. streets and roads are small, and tall buildings lie between different land levels. many public transportation such as metro, bike, touring trains are available. bay areas with beautiful scenery are filled with tourists. small and large boats reside in the harbor area. this may be the future which kaohsiung city want to be.

SF today: route

driving from LA to SF on freeway is about 5-7 hours. it's better to leave around 4-5am, and having 1-2 stops at rest areas. then we can arrive at SF around 11am. San Jose will be passed by on the way to SF, nearly one hour away from destination.

MMO: society

Since MMO or its early form MUD are consisted with real people instead of AI, the relationship or politics in the virtual world is similar with those in real world. Complicated even simple procedures are eventually controlled by people, not simply by objective rules. Interesting : ) Same conflicts in mailing lists of open source projects can also be seen in these virtual societies.

Alexa of Amazon is cool, which may be the most integrated AI service on cloud, including connection to Smart family products. It has affordable price for hardware products such as Echo, Tap, and Dot.
