Plex: Next generation transcoding Yep, we just improved hardware transcoding again, giving your CPU a well-deserved break by offloading the work to that generous GPU. Depending on your setup, this means the potential to transcode more concurrent streams with even better performance.

MPEG-G: the ugly

Source: https://globaldossier.uspto.gov/#/result/publication/WO/2018071080/1

The patents all relate to how the sequence is encoded in the MPEG-G draft specification.   Many of these patents have similar problems with prior art, with some claims being sufficiently woolly that CRAM, among others, would infringe on them if granted.  Some are simply huge - over 100 pages of impenetrable lawyer speak and 80+ claims.  Fighting this has become an enormous and unwelcome time sink.

TVs are lookin’ fiiine
We’ve updated the user experience on our Samsung and LG apps, as well as PlayStation 4, making it easier to find and enjoy the media that matters most to you. The experience is intended to be super-customizable—more consistent with more flexibility—to let you easily view and listen to different types of media from different sources. This means no more switching sources when you go from Photos (your own server) to Music (your favorite hipster friend’s music library)!

Netflix: The End of Video Coding?

In the IEEE Signal Processing Magazine issue November 2006 article “Future of Video Coding and Transmission” Prof. Edward Delp started by asking the panelists “Is video coding dead? Some feel that, with the higher coding efficiency of the H.264/MPEG-4 . . . perhaps there is not much more to do. I must admit that I have heard this compression is dead argument at least four times since I started working in image and video coding in 1976.”

Adding NewTek Native File Codecs to Your System

Adding NewTek Native File Codecs to Your System

by Chuck Baker

Earlier this year in the v3.3 FFmpeg update, support was added for NewTek’s SpeedHQ native video file format, making it available in the many applications using the FFmpeg libraries. (Read the details here: NewTek’s Native Video File Format Goes Global.) For those applications, NewTek provides codec installers for Windows and Mac on our Downloads Page.
