On Saturday 29 August 2020, the annual Debian Developers and

Contributors Conference came to a close.

DebConf20 has been held online for the first time, due to the

coronavirus (COVID-19) disease pandemic.

All of the sessions have been streamed, with a variety of ways of

participating: via IRC messaging, online collaborative text documents,

and video conferencing meeting rooms.

With more than 850 attendees from 80 different countries and a total of

over 100 event talks, discussion sessions, Birds of a Feather (BoF)

gatherings and other activities, DebConf20 [1] was a large success.

Updated Debian 10: 10.5 released

 ---------- Forwarded message ---------

From: Donald Norwood <donald@debian.org>

Date: Aug 1, 2020 11:34PM

The Debian project is pleased to announce the fifth update of its stable

distribution Debian 10 (codename "buster"). This point release mainly

adds corrections for security issues, along with a few adjustments for

serious problems. Security advisories have already been published

separately and are referenced where available.

This point release also addresses Debian Security Advisory: DSA-4735-1

grub2 -- security update [1] which covers multiple CVE issues regarding

the GRUB2 UEFI SecureBoot 'BootHole' vulnerability [2].

    1: https://www.debian.org/security/2020/dsa-4735

    2: https://www.debian.org/security/2020-GRUB-UEFI-SecureBoot/

Please note that the point release does not constitute a new version of

Debian 10 but only updates some of the packages included. There is no

need to throw away old "buster" media. After installation, packages can

be upgraded to the current versions using an up-to-date Debian mirror.

Those who frequently install updates from security.debian.org won't have

to update many packages, and most such updates are included in the point

release.

New installation images will be available soon at the regular locations.

Upgrading an existing installation to this revision can be achieved by

pointing the package management system at one of Debian's many HTTP

mirrors. A comprehensive list of mirrors is available at:

LM: Debian 10 "Buster"

Debian 10 "Buster"

The legendary Debian is an independent, community-based distro with an impressive worldwide network of volunteers. Careful testing and an extra-long development cycle give Debian a reputation for stability. Debian, which contains no proprietary components, serves as the basis for several popular Linux systems, including Ubuntu, Knoppix, and more. The latest release comes with both Wayland and Xorg display servers. AppArmor and the nftables firewall are included by default, along with simplified UEFI support and updates to thousands of packages in the vast Debian repositories.

As a special case for this point release, those using the "apt-get" tool

command is used, in order to update to the latest kernel packages. Users
of other tools such as "apt" and "aptitude" should use the "upgrade"
command.

LM: the decentralized nature of the Debian development process

The general theme is that Debian development methods are antiquated, and the decentralized nature of the Debian development process creates headaches for developers. Stapelberg's detailed commentary is organized by topic:
  • Change process: He writes, "While it is great to have a lint tool (for quick, local/offline feedback), it is even better to not require a lint tool at all. The team conducting the change (e.g., the C++ team introduces a new hardening flag for all packages) should be able to do their work transparent to me."
  • Fragmented workflow and infrastructure: "Debian generally seems to prefer decentralized approaches over centralized ones…non-standard hosting options are used rarely enough to not justify their cost, but frequently enough to be a huge pain when trying to automate changes to packages."
  • Package Uploads: Package uploads occur through a system of batch jobs. Stapelberg claims that, depending on timing, you might wait for over seven hours before your package is actually installable.
  • Bug tracker: The Debbugs bug tracker was created in 1994 and lacks some important features available with contemporary tools.
  • Email archive: Stapelberg laments that Debian still doesn't have a conveniently browsable threaded archive of mailing list discussions.
  • Machine readability: According to Stapelberg, "While it is obviously possible to deal with Debian packages programmatically, the experience is far from pleasant."
